Monsters Are People Too
I’ve been working on designs for this armor for awhile and I think I’m finally in the right vein of concept. This character is a knight for a country that worship revere really like hydra. Maybe they raise them? I don’t know. Not important now. The concept is that like the hydra they are very difficult to kill. They regenerate very quickly, regrowing limbs and all that, and probably breath fire or something akin to it. I don’t if they’ll grow extra limbs or something, but that would be cool. Their four faces allow them to see in all around them. Each one will be able to expel the breath weapon. I also imagine a general water theme.
Anywho, the Hydra Knight, see you soon. :)
A new Wal-Day this time with fan art. A new acquaintance recently asked me what my favorite game was. I said tekken, because I was obsessed with that game in highschool. But in recent years fighters just don’t have the same joy form me. Looking at this piece I realized my favorite franchise is probably mario. I actually detest doing fanart, but as you can see I didn’t mind doodling mario stuff freely at work. I’m a big mario kart lover and things like paper mario warm my cold cynical heart. I’m pretty sure I played mario 64 for like a bajillion hours. I actually worked on a mario universe based rpg that I never finished.
Anywho as you can see these guys aren’t exactly standard fanart. I’m interpreting them as how I would work their lore in my universe. I gave all the koopas little frilly yellow bits by their neck to represent gills, because I figured just adding tails wasn’t good enough. The tail by the way are meant to give them a closer connection to Bowser. As if Bowser started out as one of them.
The first guy is a Hammer Brother, an elite fighting unit that throws magically conjured hammers.
Second dude is a crazy mashup of Lakitu and a magikoopa. I wante to make the magikoopa more seprentine and fly, but I didn’t want to add wings since most things need wings to fly in the mario-verse, so you get Lakitu’s cloud. The spinies he dropped become part of my unique lore as the magikoopa removes his shell to grow out and so uses it to create a magical pet. Originally I had him sitting in an opened shell, but I like this solution better. Also the orange hair is meant to be another link to Bowser, like perhaps he started out as a magikoopa before becoming a crazy fire spewing dictator.
Third due is a paratroopa. He became more avian obviously. At first the shell just had openings, which was lame. So instead I decide to make a sort of airplane like bodice and fantail in the back. He’s carrying a bob-omb, because why not.
The last dude isn’t inspired by a monster at all but the blue shell power up from mario kart. For some reason the little wings and spike make it seem like whatever creature had that shell would be a badass. So you get this paladin/knight guy that dashes super fast to slay yonder enemies in first place… or something like that.
I think the general lore I have in mind is that each starts out as a regular koopa troopa but is magically altered to one of the other kinds.
Anywho there you go. Tony Eng doing fanart… kinda.
A wrestler girl looking happy and laying down some hurt. Two skin tones and color schemes like the gun mage post. The barrel is magic and gives whatever you pour from it magical properties. It’s based on the the barrel that Turkish dude in Street fighter has, so yes at one point I was thinking of covering her in oil. It could also be used for alchohol like for drunken boxing types. I think after reading about Cheryl Hayworth and watching the trailer for Strong, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKe7zAnhNNQ I’m going to start drawing characters based on the bodies from that photo shoot of Olympic athletes of varying sizes. http://ninamatsumoto.wordpress.com/2010/12/18/athletic-body-diversity-reference-for-artists/
Ha, looking at it now I realized Cheryl hayworth is one of the Olympians.
Wal-day once again. Week 4 and 5 are revised in one picture, since they were both about the same thing. It was a party I played in about a year ago. A re-imagining of antiquity except with D&D races and magic. I was the awesome dragonborn warlord. The other classes and races are in the tags. I’m sure you can figure them out.
Wal-day week 3 is here. A little later than I wished and I apologize for that. My best friend left town on friday and I won’t see him for two months.
Anywho the elusive breed of “fellborn” that are skilled diviners. Combine that with the inability to lie and you get lots of visitors looking for a eclectic range of things. Some want to know if their spouse is cheating on them, while others are looking for reasons to commit genocide. The latter represented in today’s entry. He’s one four main villains for a campaign I ran where a formerly famous adventuring party cause havoc and mayhem in order save the world from it.
They also may inherently be able to answer ‘yes or no’ questions without knowing the details. I haven’t decide yet.
I haven’t drawn the fellborn much. I also can’t decide on a non speciesist name(that’s how the wiki wants me to spell it.) for them yet. I’m sure they don’t like the idea of being damned from birth. Ignacerbus was one, but it doesn’t flow off the tongue that well.
Wal-day week 2. Ok so since I haven’t slept yet I still count this as wednesday. I haven’t quite developed a rhythm for this yet, but I’m getting there. It’s only the second submission, but I find this project to be very interesting. While I sketched these pieces during slow times at work I would just scribble endlessly until a figure formed. Having to analyze these flow of consciousness pieces is an interesting puzzle.
The guy the sword mage is attacking is surprised because he just teleported to his other side. I don’t know why I gave the mook medieval-ish garb. (well that’s not true.) I didn’t feel like designing a more modern style outfit that would fit the aesthetic of my universe. So you get a weird mix of the guy from Dragon’s Lair and a Magikoopa.
Note: Upon telling my sister the man is being launched by the sword mage’s attack she responds, “I thought he was throwing a clone of himself from really far away.” *sigh*
I’m not completely satisfied with the gun mage’s revision. I didn’t extrapolate the concept very far, but I expect that will happen more before I’m done with this project. That aside I really like the look on the face of the left guy and the glasses for the dude on the right.
Anywho, sleepy time now. :)
Wal-day week 1 completed. I’m actually starting next weeks today instead of on wednesday so it should all be posted on the same day.
Anywho, a little insight to creepy, happy blood mage. I started the drawing over after the initial sketch evolved into propping up a body and draining the blood like he was making kosher meat. (Slitting it’s throat to drain the blood). It was getting kind of weird so I decided to do a marginally less creepy pose, by making it an action shot.
P.S. I forgot the phylactery around his neck, even though I made a note to add it in when I noticed it wasn’t there after inking. Fail.
